Bex's story, from addiction to freedom.

You know I love a good 'guest post'.

Let me introduce Bex Chapman. (Although she will properly introduce herself below)

Bex inspires me, she is part of my network both professionally and through church. I saw her sharing her amazing story of courage, hope and overcoming challenges on Instagram the other day and asked if I could use it as a guest post! She said YES!

Bex is a single Mum, Apprentice Carpenter, and recovered methamphetamine addict. She has a smile that lights up a room and shows exactly what she talks about below, there is a beautiful life after addiction.

She is also a woman who has an amazing faith.

She has shared this part of her journey from a heart of wanting to encourage or inspire others battling with addiction or supporting someone else who is.

If you are neither of those, I encourage you to read on anyway, because it is always good to hear testimonies like these that can bring perspective, hope and understanding.

Bex also is happy for you to continue to follow her journey on her Instagram page, linked below.

Hello everyone.

My name is Bex.

I am a solo Mum to two beautiful daughters, working and learning full time as an apprentice builder.

I adore my children, I love Jesus, spending time with family and friends, public speaking, going for bush walks, animals and of course my job.

3 and a half years ago I was struggling with methamphetamine addiction, nearly lost custody of my girl and was facing jail time for some heavy charges on supplying drugs.

In a desperate attempt to turn my life around and be a better mum, I went to rehab, got clean and climbed my way out of rock bottom. To this day I still have custody of my daughter.

I started my Carpentry apprenticeship In 2021 , during the early days of my recovery and became pregnant in my first year. Pushing through morning sickness and the challenges of being a pregnant woman in construction. I worked as long as I could on site then took some time off to have my second daughter, she is 1 and a half now, I am settled back into work, almost finished my second year of my Carpentry Apprenticeship with BCITO, working for an amazing and supportive company in Upper Hutt called Houseworx.

Last year I was briefly married , it become toxic fast and I walked away from the relationship to keep myself and my children safe.

As well as becoming a qualified builder, I have future goals to build a home for me to raise my children in, I also want to present a TED talk on stage one day.

I am not on this Instagram buzz for fame.

This page is to encourage and hopefully inspire others, that you can have a beautiful life after drug addiction, to get clean for our children and also that no matter your situation, you have the choice to change it - you do not have to stay stuck!

I also want to influence other woman/mums to give a career in construction a go and help to prove that even if your solo, mums can build.

I welcome you to follow me on this journey.

Final note from me: Remember, addiction doesn't discriminate. It is not reserved for a 'type' of person. If you or someone you know is struggling with an addiction that is a having negative on your life, reach out to someone you trust, there is hope and freedom on the other side of addiction.

Because the focus of my blog and podcast is about Women on a faith journey, I also believe that God loves us all unconditionally, no matter what.

You only have to read the stories about how Jesus healed, freed and loved people in his short time on earth to know that believing in God, the way I do, is not religious, it is a way of life and I know for sure that I would rather do life with faith, and others with faith, than without it.

I am always keen to share stories of hope, healing, testimonies on my blog page, so if you have a story you would like to share, reach out to me.

I hope this story inspired you as it did me.

Arohanui,

Jen
